In 1898 a friend came to the city where we were living...
In 1898 a friend came to the city where we were living and told the joyous story of finding Christian Science. On a previous visit she had appeared most frail and very sorrowful; she had been a semi-invalid a great part of her life, and had recently lost her husband. Her two little boys had physical difficulties which seemed most serious; but after she turned to Christian Science her boys were healed and she became strong and joyful.
At that time my mother was most unhappy, for she had lost her husband, her first child, and her home; also, she had bad coughing spells and hemorrhages of the lungs. For weeks after this friend's visit the truths of Christian Science were pondered in her heart, and my mother did not know when her healing came, but she suddenly realized that she was free. Then began years of happy service as one of the earliest Christian Science nurses in the Central States, work which continued for nearly thirty years.
Meanwhile it was necessary for me to be separated from my mother, in a city where Christian Scientists were few. The problems which came during my childhood had, for the most part, to be solved by my own work, only occasionally with the help of a practitioner. In the early years measles, smallpox, diphtheria, and a form of poisoning were among the difficulties overcome without the aid of a physician or of medicine.
