I wish to express my gratitude to God for the wonderful...

I wish to express my gratitude to God for the wonderful protection He has given to me in my employment as a miner. One instance of this protection took place in October, 1935. Whilst working at the coal face I was trapped by a fall of roof, which knocked my head on one shoulder, struck me on the spine, and fastened my left arm, which seemed to be almost torn out of the socket. Workmates quickly released me. To mortal sense my condition seemed serious. I asked that I might be left where I was for a few moments, during which time I tried to collect my thoughts. "The scientific statement of being" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468) came to my thought. Mentally and audibly I repeated this, not in correct order, but a line here and a line there. My position was a difficult one, the roof at this point being only three feet in height. They placed me on a stretcher and carried me about fifty yards under this low roof to where the roadway became higher. I then had to be carried three thousand yards farther to the pit bottom. When we reached the surface a doctor and an ambulance were waiting. After an examination the doctor said he thought my neck was fractured. I denied this suggestion by repeating again and again "the scientific statement of being."

I was taken to a hospital, and a message was sent to my wife. She immediately went to a Christian Science practitioner, who came to the hospital to see me. Firmly but kindly the practitioner impressed on my thought that in God's kingdom there are no accidents, that in the realm of Spirit all is harmonious, and that God's ideas cannot be fractured or broken. X-ray photographs were taken, but the first lot were not satisfactory, as they did not show the doctors what they were looking for. More X rays were taken, and on the fifth day the doctor came and told me that the X rays revealed that nothing was broken. After seventeen days in the hospital, to the amazement of all except Christian Scientists, I was allowed to return home. Certain particulars as to age, name, and religion had to be given in the hospital. I told them I was a Christian Scientist, and am pleased to state that I was treated with the greatest respect and kindness.

Words cannot express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to God for His loving protection in this and many other instances. My greatest desire is to be worthy of the name "Christian Scientist," and to reflect God in thought and deed. I am grateful to Mary Baker Eddy for her glorious revelation of the truth which makes us free; thankful to the practitioner whose loving guidance in our testing time gave us strength and courage and helped me and mine to place our whole reliance on God.
