The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Boston, Massachusetts (The Mother Church).

Lecturer: Peter B. Biggins; introduced by Miss Florence Siever Middaugh, who said:—

Your presence here is significant of the fact that you are searching for that which heals, refreshes, and regenerates mankind.

All down the ages men and women have gathered together to hear the word of truth spoken. Now, in this age, the Science of Life and Truth has been revealed to us, and we can intelligently and successfully apply in our everyday lives that which Jesus taught his disciples. The lecturer has come here this evening to tell us of this Science.

St. Cloud, Minnesota (First Church).

Lecturer: Judge Samuel W. Greene; introduced by Stanley T. Vaill, who said:—

Christian Science is a religion based on the fundamental fact that God is the creative Principle of the universe, including man; that He is the only source of good; and that man, created in His image and likeness, can and must reflect only good.

Christian Science teaches that it was the recognition of this basic law of good that enabled Christ Jesus to demonstrate his superiority over every human and material law, thus showing to suffering humanity the way of deliverance from the bondage of sin and disease.

It is the purpose of Christian Science to carry this Christ-principle to all who are athirst for the truth that makes man free, and to reveal through demonstration the blessings ever available to all who utilize the divine power bestowed on man by his heavenly Father.

Des Plaines, Illinois (First Church).

Lecturer: William Wallace Porter; introduced by Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Bennett, who said:—

The Bible records that Christ Jesus preached and taught the truth about God and man's relationship to Him, and proved his words by demonstration, that is, by healing sickness, casting out all manner of evil, and calling back from death several who had passed on.

The Apostle John says in referring to this work, "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." He states very clearly the conditions upon which all of us may avail ourselves of this truth and its accompanying power. We must receive or accept it, and we must know it to be the truth.

Mary Baker Eddy, in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," explains to us not only the Science of being which Jesus taught, but also the method by which we may use it in every phase of our human experience. In my own experience as a Christian Scientist, the intelligent use of this Science has healed many types of illness and inharmony; but more than that it has replaced erroneous concepts of God and man with true ideas, and in so doing has brought me peace.

London, England (First Church).

Lecturer: Colin Rücker Eddison; introduced by Miss Evelyn F. Heywood, who said:—

There is no doubt that those who come to Christian Science do so, generally, for a specific reason; sometimes it is for relief from sickness, from fear, from financial or other troubles; sometimes out of sheer curiosity. But when we find Christian Science we find with the healing of our troubles something that is immeasurably greater. We find that there is being revealed to us not only the fact that God is intelligible, but that man, the real man, is intelligible also.

Years of searching in religion and in philosophy brought me no nearer to the understanding of God, or of the nature of man, and I drifted into hopeless unbelief. But Christian Science taught me that it is possible not only to have faith in God but to understand and to love Him; that Job's exclamation is true: "There is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding." It is this spirit, illumined by the light of Truth, which makes God universally and continuously available to us. This is the power and presence which Jesus lived and taught.

On page 209 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes, "Spiritual sense is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God." Christian Science enables us to utilize this spiritual sense in all circumstances and conditions.

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan (First Church).

Lecturer: John Henry Weer; introduced by Charles W. Atkin, who said:—

Christ Jesus said, "The kingdom of God is within you;" and he also said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." That is, as we come into the understanding of his teachings we are freed from our problems and enjoy heaven, harmony, herre and now.

As we look about us we see the need of a practical Christianity, a Christianity that will eliminate human want and suffering, wipe out unemployment, solve economic problems, heal industrial strife, and establish universal peace.

Christian Science teaches us how to practice religion as Jesus practiced it. It proves to us that God is not a God afar off, but that He "is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." It reveals to us that God is not silent, for if we but listen we shall find that He is constantly pouring spiritual truth into our consciousness.

As you listen to the lecture this evening I trust that each and every one of you will receive some healing message, some spiritual unfoldment that will enable you to prove that God's yoke is easy and His burden light.

Montesano, Washington (Society).

Lecturer: Dr. John M. Tutt; introduced by Pierce Thompson, who said:—

The teachings of Christian Science, when properly applied, have been both healer and protector for me. I know of nothing able to compare with them in value.

Jesus said of his true followers, "By their fruits ye shall know them." His religion was of vital significance; and the test of his disciples' faith and understanding lay in their ability to demonstrate the truths he taught.

Mary Baker Eddy received healing in a time of great need. She realized that God's divine law is the healer. For three years thereafter she worked to find the basis for this proof of God's care. The Bible was her only textbook, and from its pages she was led to the understanding of divine law and its application to all human needs. The inevitable result of such loving, persistent, and divinely guided effort was the unfoldment and establishment of the Christian Science movement with all its activities.
