The Piece of Silver

In the fifteenth chapter of the Gospel according to Luke is recorded Christ Jesus' parable of a woman who had ten pieces of silver but had lost one of them. The parable shows the steps taken by the woman to regain the lost piece of silver. This parable points an important lesson to all who may seem to have lost something of value.

When the woman discovered her loss, her first step was to "light a candle." Is not more light the first need when something of value seems to have been lost, whether it is health, happiness, peace, employment, or a purse? The light of Truth, which destroys the darkness of ignorance and the confusion of fear, is often found in a passage from the Bible or from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" or other books written by Mary Baker Eddy, or from other authorized Christian Science literature. Such a passage may include a needed fact regarding the solution of the problem. One may read long, and earnestly ponder the statements contained in the textbooks of Christian Science, the Bible and Science and Health, before the gleam appears to lighten his thought. Or one may be led to ask help of a more experienced student of Christian Science.

The candle of truth is ready at hand to give forth its light, but it must be used. The human effort to find light must be made. The lighting of the candle is a most important step in working out a problem. At times, however, the prized and desired possession—health or harmony—may still seem to be missing, even though the truth has been earnestly declared. In reality no good thing is ever absent. It is only hidden from human view. It is in human experience only that loss may seem to occur; nothing is ever really lost in the realm of all-knowing intelligence. When one has lighted his candle, declared the truth, and the desired thing of value still appears to be missing, the searcher may know that further steps are necessary.
