From childhood up to my thirty-eighth year I suffered...
From childhood up to my thirty-eighth year I suffered constantly from excruciating sick headaches, and was often compelled to leave my place of business early in the day to go home and to bed. This trouble seemed to be hereditary, for I had seen my mother suffer with the same difficulty for many years. I had a number of physicians as well as oculists, and tried many different remedies until I was attracted to Christian Science.
After reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, together with the Bible, and with the help of a practitioner, I soon learned that I had to control a quick temper, resentment, anger, discouragement, despondency, and the habit of excessive use of profanity. I was soon healed of headaches and stomach troubles, and have had no return of these in the twenty-eight years that have passed since I took up the study of Christian Science. I was healed of the habit of excessive smoking, which left me soon after I became interested in Science.
I have had many other healings, but one in particular which has always stood out to me was the healing of an abscess. About ten years before coming into Christian Science I had an abscess at the base of the spine and was confined to my bed for nearly five weeks, with the physician coming daily and finally operating, all of which was very painful. Shortly after becoming interested in Christian Science I had a similar experience with an abscess, but with the help of a practitioner the difficulty was overcome in less than a week. During this period I had been reading our literature and the textbook. In an article in the Sentinel the writer had described a person who had a beautiful rosebud, and who had tried to hasten the unfolding of the rose by taking a needle to pry the petals apart, but the bud withered and dried up. A friend of mine called up on the telephone during this experience to ask my wife how I was getting on and suggested that maybe I should have a physician to open the abscess, as I was in great pain. When my wife told me what was suggested I replied that if God could unfold the rose He could also take care of me; and in the course of a few hours the abscess opened and drained so completely that I was almost immediately relieved of pain, and in a few days was back attending to my business. In this healing there was no scar left as in the first experience.
