God with Us

"If God be for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31.) What faith in God, what understanding, do these simple words of Paul show! As we ponder them we see how the apostle was sustained during all his arduous endeavors to spread the gospel of Christ Jesus. He had attained to a knowledge of God that was profound; he understood God to be the Father of man, as the Master had taught; and this understanding supported his faith and made him certain of divine protection. Without this certainty, how could he have defended the Christian faith as he did; how have braved the scorn and endured the persecutions of men? Paul was as certain that God was with him as he was of his consciousness of life; and with this certainty he was able to endure and to overcome.

Can we become as sure as was Paul of God's protecting presence and power? Is it possible for us so to understand the nature of God and man's relationship to him that we can place complete reliance on Him? Many a time questions such as these have been asked during the centuries since the beginning of the Christian era; and although many have been able to gain a measure of spiritual understanding and faith, it has to be admitted that often the understanding and the faith were quite inadequate to enable them to bear the strain which the perplexities of human experience placed upon them.

Since Christian Science was discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866 a great change has come over the human situation. No longer need faith in God be weak and undependable, because based on an understanding of Him that is inadequate. Christian Science has done away with that; for it reveals God in His real nature, and makes known the true relationship existing between Him and man. God, Christian Science declares, is infinite Spirit or Mind, infinite Love, infinite good, and man is His idea, His image or reflection. We thus have the truth about God and man, and an understanding of the relationship between God and man, His idea. We know that since man reflects God, all the qualities of God must be expressed by him; and as these qualities are good, we are assured that man is always in the enjoyment of good.
