I should like to relate how purity of thought, free from all fear and false suggestion, as Christian Science teaches us, will enable us to see—to understand—God, and bring about harmonious conditions in human experience. On page 167 of Science and Health our Leader writes, "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." Through this reliance we were privileged, in our home, to see the healing of infantile paralysis within twenty hours. This epidemic had our city in such a grip of fear that the authorities even considered closing the schools and the city playgrounds. We had no fear of it at all, and our three children, who have been born and reared in Christian Science, were allowed to do just the things they did at any other time.

One Wednesday night I put my five-year-old daughter to bed before I went to church. She seemed well and went right to sleep. When I returned from church she began to vomit and seemed to have a very high fever. She continued to grow worse and by two o'clock she could not use her legs at all, not even to sit up in bed. I called a practitioner at this time and she very lovingly said she would help me. I sat by the bed for one hour after this, realizing the truth. My thought was very clear about the perfection of God and His idea, and I had no fear to overcome, so I felt that my work was done and I lay down and went to sleep. In the morning the fever was a great deal higher and the muscular contractions in the child's body and her inability even to speak made it seem difficult to realize that only the senses of Soul are real and testify to the truth, and that the material senses always lie. The Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, for that week, was entitled "Soul" and it surely met my need, as the Lessons always do. I sat by the child's bed and read, and tried to realize the truth all day. I also called the practitioner again for help. There was the greatest sense of peace and quiet in the home that day that I have felt at any time.

About two o'clock in the afternoon this child began to return rapidly to normal, and asked for something to eat, which was given to her. Soon after that she wanted stories read to her, and then wanted her sisters to play on the bed with her. A caller came in that afternoon, and she heard the children talking in the next room and never suspected that anything but a normal condition existed. By six o'clock, when her father came home, the child was up and dressed and sat at the table at dinner time. The next day she played outside and was quite normal.
