Our Father in Heaven

It is safe to say that right thinking men desire to know God. Those who know something about Christian Science strive to banish the thought of a personal God who has human traits and human habits. Not one of the five material senses ever tells us anything about God. The Father-Mother God is unapproached, untouched, by material sense.

"Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us," was the request which Philip made of Jesus. Philip did not say, Show us God or Jehovah. Why not? "Father" was the term Jesus used for the infinite divine consciousness whom we call God. The word "Father," as meaning God, was not thus employed very much in the Old Testament, but Jesus, whose gentleness and tenderness abounded, expressed his daily intimate relation with God by using the word which in tribal relation carried to the Jew the multiple idea of head, power, authority, and protection. It is no cause for wonder that Philip and his companions desired to see the Father about whom Jesus talked so much.

"He that hath seen me hath seen the Father," said Jesus. It was not possible for Philip, nor is it possible for us, to conceive of the activity of Life, Truth, and Love except as exemplified and made manifest by Jesus the Christ. He showed them all of Truth they were able to receive.
