It was during the World War that I first became interested in Christian Science. The very thought of war filled me with terror, but I seemed unable to stop thinking about it. Many of my classmates and near friends were getting ready for oversea service. This was a great anxiety and sorrow to me.
All through the summer of 1917 I was in bed most of the time. I could not eat without great distress, and slept very little at night. The doctor said that I was suffering from nervous prostration, but the medicine he gave me did not help at all. At this time a friend was healed of typhoid fever in one Christian Science treatment. Her gratitude was so great that the next Wednesday night she took me to church. I was greatly impressed by the testimonies and decided to go the next day to a practitioner for help. I bought a copy of Science and Health and began to study, reading almost constantly for weeks. It interested me so much that I did not want to go to bed, but when I did so I went right to sleep.
I learned from my study that evil conditions are not real or God-created. This brought me such joy that I was never unhappy about the war again, and later on was engaged in war work. In three weeks after treatment was begun I was completely healed, a satisfactory position had been secured, and I was working every day.
