The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Chicago, Illinois (First Church).
Lecturer: Peter B. Biggins; introduced by Joseph S. Glickauf, who said:—
Christian Science is reiterating in our day with specific emphasis that memorable invitation of the Master, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." All who accept this compassionate appeal are receiving the blessings, manifest in healing, comfort, joy, and peace.
My attention was directed to Christian Science some thirty years ago by the restoration of sight to a friend who had been blind. I was so impressed with this marvelous healing that I began at once to read the Christian Science textbook. Not long after, I was taken ill with a severe fever, and I decided to test the healing efficacy of this wonderful religion for myself. I did, and was quickly healed. Since that time I have received many healings, and I can say as did Job of old, "I know that my redeemer liveth."
Liverpool, Lancashire, England (First Church).
Lecturer: Gavin W. Allan; introduced by John Claude Waller, who said:—
Jesus said, "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world," and if these words were true on the day they were spoken upon the mountain in Galilee, they must be true today. And they are true. They are true for you and for me. They are attested by many infallible proofs within our midst: by sin cast out, by bodies healed, by lives reformed. In my own experience happiness, health, and peace have taken the place of despondency and unhappiness. How I rejoice when I think how the God of love, revealed through Christian Science, came to me like a breath of sweet, purifying air, dissipating false concepts and delusions!
Let us give this hour to God. Let us leave our problems, our anxieties, and follow with close attention the lecture which we are to hear. It will help us all to the highest privilege—that of following more closely in the footsteps of Christ Jesus.
St. Albans, New York (First Church).
Lecturer: Francis Lyster Jandron; introduced by Walter G. Willoschat, who said:—
In accepting the Bible as the basis of our religious teachings, we learn from its very first chapter, in the book of Genesis, that God not only created all, but pronounced all of His creation "very good"; and in the book of Revelation we find the pronouncement by John, "The Lord God omnipotent reigneth." These references may be of little value to one if casually read, but when studied in the light of Christian Science, the conclusion is reached that omnipotent God, good, governs the universe, including man.
Since government operates through laws, it is of vital importance to us to become more familiar with the laws of God and their operation in behalf of man and the universe in which we live. Just how God's laws operate will be competently explained to you by our honored guest of the evening, who has chosen for the subject of his lecture, "Christian Science: the Science of Good Government."
Through the application of these laws in Christian Science I have been healed of chronic constipation, grippe, and sciatica, and my wife of a severe case of abdominal poisoning which, according to medical laws, required an immediate operation. We have experienced other healings also, but these laws do not operate only to heal disease. They have also given us greater freedom from false laws of fear and limitation. They will do the same for you, friends, since the Master, Christ Jesus, has said, "Look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh."
Nelson, British Columbia, Canada (First Church).
Lecturer: Professor Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Mrs. Minta A. Deagon, who said:—
Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Christian Scientists the world over are proving that statement by healing all manner of discordant conditions through the power of Truth.
My attention was first called to Christian Science through the healing of my mother of a broken hip socket. The surgeons attending her gave her no hope that she would ever walk again; and for three years she was confined to her chair, a cripple. During this time rheumatism added to her suffering. When Christian Science was presented to her she accepted it, and although her healing was not instantaneous, it was complete.
Plymouth, Indiana (Society).
Lecturer: Paul Stark Seeley; introduced by Paul Swearingen, who said:—
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the statement is given (p. 390), "God is no more the author of sickness than He is of sin." In this textbook (ibid., p. 143) the scientific fact is also revealed that "the sick are more deplorably lost than the sinning, if the sick cannot rely on God for help and the sinning can." Christian Science is a scientific knowledge of the working Principle of Christ, Truth, that will solve every problem of everyday life, whatever our occupation may be. I have been able to prove in my own experience, beyond question or doubt, that God can and does take care of His children in every activity of life.
I have been healed of a broken arm and many other physical ailments through the application of Christian Science. The problem of unemployment was solved through the understanding that it is man's birthright to have employment. Many other business problems have been solved in Christian Science. I have learned to know that by relying on God each day for every activity we shall be victorious.
