Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication
Mexico.
Only one unfriendly statement has been noted in the press during the past year, and this was made by a delegate to a Convention on Education, who was visiting from another country. The answer sent by the Committee was not published.
Both the English and the Spanish lectures were advertised in the principal morning newspapers, and an advertisement was also placed twice in the local German newspaper this year, as there are a number of members of the German colony who have manifested interest in our movement, in addition to several who are members of the branch church here.
The editor-in-chief of one of the principal daily morning newspapers published in Mexico City was presented with a subscription to The Christian Science Monitor by the local branch church and has expressed his high appreciation of the contents of our daily newspaper. A Guide to Tourists entitled "The Week in Mexico" has carried the address of our branch church in the Directory of Churches.
Full excerpts selected from the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly have been published continuously throughout the year by the morning newspapers with the largest circulations among the English-speaking residents of Mexico. Announcements of the services, with the Golden Text, have been published in the only English weekly issued in the capital. Cuba.
Publication of excerpts from the Lesson-Sermons has been resumed. After a change in editors of the principal English-language daily in Havana, the excerpts were not published for some time, as it seemed to be the policy of the newspaper editor to avoid all religious copy. However, when the lecture committee approached the newspaper regarding the matter of reporting our annual lecture, the editor remarked that he thought the Monitor an excellent newspaper and said that he would like to exchange a subscription to his newspaper for one to the Monitor. The member of the lecture committee who had interviewed the editor reported this conversation to the Committee on Publication, and although an exchange of subscriptions was not possible, the Committee could and did very gladly start passing along to the editor her Monitors. After this had been unobtrusively done for some time, the Committee again offered the editor excerpts from the Lesson-Sermons, and when he learned that she was the one who had been supplying him with copies of the Monitor, he was very glad to insert the excerpts in return for this courtesy.
The annual lecture in January was the first one to be held in our own church auditorium. It was radiocast with such good success that the society was congratulated on the acoustics of the auditorium, as the transmission was exceptionally clear and the best which that particular station had found in Havana. A translation of the lecture into Spanish was read after its delivery in English by the lecturer, and both audiences were most attentive and receptive. The lecture was quite fully published in English, but efforts to have the translation appear in one of the Spanish-language dailies were unsuccessful.
