When I was twelve I joined my mother in America, and found that my stepfather was an agnostic. He destroyed my faith in the doctrines of the church in which I had been brought up, but I shall always be grateful because he started me first in my search for Truth. I never lost faith in the existence of God, and I used to pray that God would reveal Himself to me as Truth. This prayer was answered and I was led into Christian Science, but not for many weary years. Though I lived in America until I was twenty, I never heard of Christian Science while there. I searched for Truth through the paths of mental science, theosophy, and even spiritualism, leaving each after a short time with the disappointed conviction that instead of getting nearer to God I was going father and farther from Him.
In 1922 after a visit to England I went to India to rejoin my husband, and in the same boarding house in which we stayed I met an American and his wife. The latter was a Christian Scientist, and after a few earnest chats with her I decided to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, with an open, unbiased thought. I did so, and though at first I found some of its statements difficult to understand, I soon realized it was the truth I had sought so long. Since that time I have never doubted that it is the straight and narrow path of which Jesus spoke, and have rejoiced greatly at the way in which it has explained and clarified the Bible to me.
Although I did not come into Christian Science for bodily healings, I have had many. Among others, sciatica and lumbago were healed very quickly after the belief of pain was overcome. During the healing of the effects of sciatica, and also of a bad case of nerves which filled me with great fear and a deep sense of depression, as well as a healing of heart trouble, I learned many lessons of patience, humility, and faith in the love of our Father-Mother God, divine Principle. I should like to bear special tribute to the love and patience of the practitioner who helped me through this difficult period. I am also grateful for the overcoming of frequent coughs and colds. This came through the clear realization that matter could not of itself form or hold any condition contrary to the one Mind.
