Lecturer: Dr. Hendrik J. de Lange; introduced by Robert Peel, who said:—

In a university such as Harvard there are thousands of lectures given every year, on a vast array of subjects and representing every conceivable point of view. One of the most discouraging tasks that confronts the student is the attempt to reconcile and co-ordinate the antagonistic theories propounded by lectures in different fields—and even in the same field. The president of our university has recently stressed the urgent need for men of vision who shall be able to escape the constricted views of the specialist and synthesize the results of specialized scholarship and research into new forms of knowledge more applicable to the ultimate needs of humanity. In other words, what is desperately needed today is a Science of sciences, a recognition of the fundamental Principle underlying all phases of knowledge and experience.
