Jesus, the Master Scientist
This is a scientific age. All the world is talking and writing about the marvels of science—the advancement of scientific research, penetrating as it does into realms of thought and action which but a few short years ago seemed to be unknown and unknowable. The marvels of the radio and the aeroplane we accept today as a natural and quite understandable part of human experience. Along every line which has bearing upon human activity, scientific inquiry is being made by men and women the world over. Much self-sacrifice and indefatigable toil are involved in this splendid work. Philosophers and educationists, along with natural scientists, are all taking a very active part in this work, which is described as "scientific research."
In this matter, however, as in all matters which affect the welfare of mankind, we must honestly face facts. Has this scientific research pronouncedly reduced sin or sickness? Is crime less today than before? Can we honestly say that this scientific research has really done much to rid men of those faults of character and disposition which so frequently are the cause of ruined lives? Can it heal men broken by fear and sorrow? Can it bring real happiness and safety to a single individual? There is but one answer to each and all of such questions, and it is negative.
Where, then, must we turn for a true and lasting solution of these vexed and pressing human problems? Some sixty years ago, with the publication of her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy presented to the world the most illuminating commentary on the Bible ever written. In this book she makes the following arresting statement (p. 313): "Jesus of Nazareth was themost scientific man that ever trod the globe. He plunged beneath the material surface of things, and found the spiritual cause."
