In reply to your correspondent, "Thinker," may I say...
Stroud Journal
In reply to your correspondent, "Thinker," may I say that the first tenet of Christian Science reads as follows: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 497).
Mrs. Eddy went to Mr. Quimby for treatment and for some time was under his care. It was not until after his passing that she discovered Christian Science and learned that his mesmeric magnetic method of treating disease was a subtle counterfeit of the true, a method at once destructive to health and dangerous to character. Mrs. Eddy's purpose in founding the Church of Christ, Scientist, was "to organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 17).
When the Bible is studied in conjunction with the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, hitherto unknown treasures of the Bible are unlocked, and it is found that the truth contained therein deals with exact Science, which can be used in the solving of all manner of problems, physical, moral, and mental. The works of the prophets, Christ Jesus, and the early Christians are then found to belong not to a dispensation now ended, but can be practically demonstrated in all ages. In proportion as one gains what is termed the Mind of Christ one is able to prove one's understanding through demonstration, the effect of which is seen in the healing of sickness and sin.
