"Honest, unselfish, loving, and meek"

"The spiritual sense of truth must be gained before Truth can be understood. This sense is assimilated only as we are honest, unselfish, loving, and meek." So writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 272 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." How pregnant with healing is this statement when viewed in the light of earnest desire! However much one may have read the letter of Christian Science, endeavoring to digest mentally the marvelous truths contained therein, the spiritual sense of truth is assimilated only with the unfoldment of these qualities in thought. As the loveliness of the Christ appears, there comes the unfolding understanding in human consciousness of the perfection of God and man.

Outside of Christian Science mortals are trained from babyhood to accept as true the evidence of the five physical senses, which constantly points to discord and decay, while the exquisite qualities of the real and only Mind are hidden by the mists of materiality. As one begins the earnest study of Christian Science, however, there gradually dawns in thought something of the spiritual light and loveliness that was discerned by Jesus.

To gain spiritual sense is the animating desire of every sincere student of Christian Science. The effort to put into practice the understanding which follows earnest study of the Bible and our Leader's writings, brings demonstration, and leads to the replacement of material sense with spiritual sense. Obedient to the instruction given in Science and Health (p. 495), to "study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit," the attentive student is learning constantly to eliminate the errors of mortal belief and to establish the knowledge of true being.
