Giving Testimonies

[Original article in German]

When we ponder the Psalmist's songs of praise and thanksgiving, there awakens in us a desire to "praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men." Have not all of us who know of Christian Science had at least one healing which would be worthy of being recounted in a public testimony?

What is great or small? Every kindness, every good deed, comes from God, and every one is great. Then we should not be silent about it. Giving a testimony of healing is a progressive step, a step we cannot avoid taking, and one we cannot take without being blessed. In giving a testimony we should harbor no thought of lack, either of readiness in speaking or of suitable words, nor any belief of weak voice or timidity.

On page 3 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes: "Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech." It may be that someone who is struggling with shyness and timidity, or some other difficulty, has misinterpreted this well-known passage. He may have interpreted it to mean that it is not particularly important that we give thanks in words. But in his endeavor to express his gratitude in good works, to be loving and sincere, he will finally come to see that the giving of a testimony is also a good deed, which may heal him of this very shyness and timidity, or other errors. Giving a testimony, when one is guided by divine Love to do so, is always a good deed, for it enriches one's knowledge and understanding of God and His creation, inclusive of man.
