No Retrogression

On page 442 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "An improved belief cannot retrograde." Christian Scientists should not pass lightly over this remarkable statement. It is part of God's revelation to the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. It is a message of divine Love to the human consciousness, and is therefore provable in human experience.

The word "cannot" is significant. Spiritual healing confers upon an improved belief the quality of progressiveness. The divine mandate is "Onward!" When the children of Israel were fleeing from the bondage of Egypt, although their enslavers were in immediate pursuit and the Red Sea appeared an impassable barrier to progress, yet the command of the Lord was to go forward.

However, this demand of God that we go forward and not backward is not obeyed until it is understood, acknowledged, and adopted. Otherwise mortal mind appears to set up its so-called law of retrogression, in our blind conformity to which our treatments seem to be reversed. We are subject to whatever laws we adopt.
