At a time when I had suffered long from ill health, and when I had lost faith in material medicines, diet, and hygiene, my attention was called to Christian Science. I attended a Sunday service and a little later a lecture. The healing atmosphere of the church service and the logic and practical nature of what the lecturer said led me to investigate and to take up the study of Christian Science. I was suffering from a severe cold at this time, so asked a practitioner for help, and in a few days I was healed. At the same time I was healed of boils, acute indigestion, and the fear of eating certain foods.
For more than fourteen years I had been an inveterate smoker, and at different times had tried to overcome this habit through human will power, but without any lasting success. After I had been studying the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, and reading Science literature for a little more than a year, the desire for tobacco left me. This healing occurred over sixteen years ago, and I have never had any desire to use tobacco since then.
At the time of an influenze epidemic, some years ago, I awoke one morning with the symptoms of this disease. I was away from home and did not feel able to go about my work, so went to a Christian Science Reading Room and read and studied the Bible, Science and Health, and other Christian Science literature the greater part of the day. My thought became so absorbed in this reading and study and so illumined with the truth, that in the evening when I went to dinner most of the symptoms of influenza had disappeared. I continued to read that evening and awoke the following morning completely healed. This experience illustrated what Mrs. Eddy has written in the Christian Science textbook (p. 400): "By lifting thought above error, or disease, and contending persistently for truth, you destroy error."
