The True Realm of Business

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says (p. 209): "The compounded minerals or aggregated substances composing the earth, the relations which constituent masses hold to each other, the magnitudes, distances, and revolutions of the celestial bodies, are of no real importance, when we remember that they all must give place to the spiritual fact by the translation of man and the universe back into Spirit. In proportion as this is done, man and the universe will be found harmonious and eternal." Demonstrable understanding of the spiritual reality is the goal toward which we need to work in all our activities, whether they be social, political, or economic.

In the business world we begin to see the need for translating what appears to be a babel of materiality into the pure language of Spirit. So long as we base our concept of business on matter, on the belief that the accumulation of material things constitutes business and that in this greed for accumulating the every-man-for-himself policy must needs be pursued, so long shall we have loss, business failures, and unemployment.

But let us translate our concept of business into the spiritual realm, and what do we find? We find that in reality business is an activity of divine Mind, expressing the spiritual qualities of honesty, integrity, trustworthiness; of love, intelligence, alertness, and co-operation. As we understand this fact about business, and manifest these spiritual qualities, we gain confidence, trust, appreciation, and there comes about a right adjustment of supply and demand. In this translation of business into spiritual qualities, the evil suggestions of sloth, apathy, discouragement, and greed disappear. And in this spiritualized concept of business we soon discover what our Leader means when she says in Science and Health (p. 206), "In the scientific relation of God to man, we find that whatever blesses one blesses all," blesses employer and employee, dealer and patron.
