From childhood I longed to belong to a church that followed the teachings of Christ Jesus, but was unable to find what I sought until Christian Science was brought to my notice. I was never satisfied with what I learned from the Bible or from the sermons I heard while attending church or Sunday school. There seemed to be something lacking, and when I asked those who I thought should know, concerning certain passages of Scripture, I was usually told that in due time the Bible would be unlocked; then all would know and practice its truths as Christ Jesus did. In the meantime I must be patient and keep on praying, and sooner or later my prayers would be answered.
I tried to believe them, but could not, for Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free;" and Paul wrote, "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation." I was positive that these passages surely meant that we should know the truth now. The time came when I did not know whether I believed in God or not; but God was surely with me, for in due time He brought me to Christian Science, the very truth for which I was always searching, and I am sincerely grateful.
I was suffering from a very severe bilious headache when I first tried Christian Science. All day the thought kept coming to me to call a practitioner; but I put it from me, as I thought it was of the devil and that I would go to perdition if I even tried to. But "man's extremity is God's opportunity;" so when I thought I could stand the pain no longer, I asked my daughter to call a practitioner, which she did, and in about five minutes I was healed. Then I knew that my prayers had been answered and I had found the "pearl of great price." Since then I have learned that every wrong thought causes us to suffer in one way or another, and I am very grateful to say that I am gradually overcoming such wrong thoughts as hatred, envy, jealousy, resentment, and criticism, and am consequently in better health than ever before. I have had many beautiful healings, including those of hip disease, sunstroke, bronchitis, dizzy spells, deafness, pleural pneumonia, and ulcerated stomach.
