Divine Love, the Life of Man

Christ Jesus came that we "might have life," and that we "might have it more abundantly." That we might have greater control over adverse conditions and enjoy a larger sense of Life, instead of a mere existence, was the declared purpose of his mission. Following in the footsteps of the Master, our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, urges (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 355), "Let discord of every name and nature be heard no more, and let the harmonious and true sense of Life and being take possession of human consciousness."

To accomplish this transformation, we need, first, to gain a better sense of what Life really is. When a certain lawyer asked Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life, Jesus said to him, "What is written in the law? how readest thou?" And he answered in effect, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and soul and strength; and thy neighbor as thyself. To which Jesus replied, "Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live." Thus was established the scientific fact that to gain Life, we must love.

The scene of every contest with discordant belief is in the so-called human consciousness. This consciousness must be purified, for here it is that the seedlings of sin, disease, and death are sown. However, Christian Science teaches that in real being there is no opposing discord, and that the belief in it is an illusion of the material senses which has neither substance nor reality. Christian Science teaches, too, that Life is divine Love, because God is Love and God is the Life of man; and therefore that man's real being is the reflection of infinite Love.
