The Comforter

How tenderly the Master spake
To his disciples true:
The Comforter to you will come,
If I depart from you!

And they who heard him, sorrowing,
Would not have bade him stay,
Had they the coming glory glimpsed
Of Pentecostal day.

Parting from those who held him dear,
He blessed them ere he went;
And then, straight from the heart of Love
The Comforter was sent.

Dear friend, who often walked with me,
My heavenward steps to guide,
I need not mourn if now it seems
Our pathways must divide;

But can rejoice to know that Love
The hungry heart doth feed,
And trust Love's ever tender care
Will meet the human need.

Your blessing stays; with gratitude
I lift my thought above,
For lo, the Comforter has come,
Straight from the heart of Love.
