Holding to the Real

On page 259 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,—perfect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration." How simply and clearly she states the fact that an understanding of God and man as perfect is essential in the work of healing as carried out in Christian Science practice! And how grateful the Christian Scientist is for this understanding! Difficulties may seem to present themselves to him—beliefs of sickness and sin, limitation and lack, loss and sorrow—but whatever the nature of the problem, he strives to solve it through steadfast adherence to the great fundamental truth of perfect God and perfect man.

The Christian Science method of dealing with the troubles which beset a mortal sense of existence differs from all other methods. Consider how mankind regards itself and human conditions. Until enlightened spiritually, it believes implicitly in imperfection. It believes evil to be as real as good. It believes that sin, disease, and death are as real as holiness, health, and life. In short, mankind believes that imperfection is as real as perfection. And what havoc this false belief plays with the happiness of men! How it undermines health, prolongs the belief of sickness, keeps whosoever entertains it from enjoyment of the good—the unlimited good—which is the heritage of man as the son of God!

The truth which Christian Science reveals reverses the false beliefs held by mortals. God is infinitely good—perfect—and man, God's idea, God's reflection, is likewise perfect. What occurs as this is understood? The error of believing in the reality of evil, of imperfection, is recognized; and this recognition is the first step in the rejection of the error. What a glorious vista opens up before the spiritual vision of the student when he knows that all manner of evil can be overcome through the realization of the truth that perfection alone is real! He understands how disease can be healed, sin overcome, lack, limitation, sorrow, suffering, despair mastered, by the knowledge of the perfection of God and man.
