Gazette

I have not read the pamphlet so freely quoted in your issue of the 19th inst., but, judging by the paragraphs quoted, I am wondering if it is of recent date, as the writer displays an ignorance about Mrs. Eddy and Christian Science which is unusual in these days.

The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was included in the list of the best hundred books by American women writers during the last hundred years, selected by a committee composed of some of the most distinguished writers in America. The books were judged both by literary standard and by their influence in molding the public thought of their own and succeeding generations. These facts speak for themselves.

Mrs. Eddy's large fortune, to which the writer of the pamphlet takes exception, accumulated through the sale of her writings, has always been devoted to the numerous activities of the Christian Science churches, which include the amelioration of sickness and distress. It was reported at the last Annual Meeting of The Mother Church that a great amount of relief had been given in the past twelve months to distressed areas in the United States and in many parts of Europe.
