Evening Star

In the article published by you on September 12, Christian Science is described as being "in direct descent from Mesmer's teaching," in common with spiritualism, hypnotism, and psychoanalysis. For the benefit of those of your readers who might be misled by such a misstatement, I trust you will allow me to point out that Christian Science is the direct antithesis of mesmerism or animal magnetism and its phases. Whereas mesmerism is the despotic action of one human mind over another, Christian Science is based on the Bible teaching that the human or carnal mind, being the cause of disease, cannot cure disease, and must be put off. A single citation from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," will suffice to show how healing in Christian Science is accomplished. On page 482 of that book Mrs. Eddy writes: "Christian Science is the law of Truth, which heals the sick on the basis of the one Mind or God. It can heal in no other way, since the human, mortal mind so-called is not a healer, but causes the belief in disease."
