Early in 1925 I was compelled to be absent from my work because of jaundice and general debility. The physician was of the opinion that it would be many weeks before I should be well again, and as this had followed a year of very poor health and low spirits, I certainly felt wretched. My work seemed to be more than I could cope with and the conditions were unpleasant; there were domestic and financial difficulties, and my wife was suffering severely from eczema, a complaint which had troubled her from childhood. Indeed, my vision seemed so beclouded by trouble that I could see good nowhere.
Then we learned of Christian Science. A friend left a few copies of the Christian Science Sentinel for me to read as I lay in bed. At first I was not much interested in these, but wanted to see the book which was so frequently quoted—"Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. A copy was obtained for me and I read it carefully and with growing interest. In a few days I was well, and within a week the doctor pronounced me fit to return to work. My duties were taken up with new zest and many of the old difficulties melted away. I had found the source of life and strength, and acquaintances observed the change in me.
As Christian Science was helping me so much, I felt sure that it would heal my wife of eczema, which, at that time, covered both hands and arms and was causing such irritation and pain that she could sleep but little and could do no work that entailed immersing her hands in water. One night we read a few pages of Science and Health, and before sleeping we talked over and tried to understand the truths elucidated therein. The fact of man's present perfection must have permeated her consciousness, because, although ointment had previously been applied morning and night, we did not think of the eczema for several days, and then we realized that it had entirely disappeared. Great was our joy, for surely this that we had found must be "the Sun of righteousness . . . with healing in his wings." A year later the trouble again manifested itself slightly, but very quickly yielded to Christian Science treatment, and the healing has been permanent.
