Through the teaching of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer...

Through the teaching of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, as recorded in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," I was completely healed of tuberculosis, contracted after I had been gassed in the battle of the Somme. I consider that I owe my life to this revelation of Truth, which our Leader has given to the world through her consecrated work; and no words can express my deep gratitude to her for the inestimable blessings which have come to me through this experience.

I was brought up in materia medica, being the son of a physician and surgeon. During the war I served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and after being invalided out of the front line, I was in a hospital in England for about a year, under the care of the best physicians that could be provided. I was then sent to Canada as an incurable; and, knowing nothing at that time of Christian Science, in my extremity I again consulted a specialist in New York, in the hope of getting some relief from the pain I was suffering and from the fear of spending the rest of my life in a sanatorium. I was informed that I could not expect to live, and was advised to put my affairs in order and to prepare for the worst.

At this juncture Christian Science was presented to me by some people I met in New York. I was persuaded to take the textbook home with me to Canada to read. Nothing was told me of the Christian Science movement, and I did not know that any other literature was published, or that The Mother Church existed.
