Spiritual Mountain Climbing

Recently,  a distinguished clergyman radiocast a sermon in which, by many interesting similes drawn from mountain climbing, he sought to show that the seeker for Truth reaches the heights of a successful Christian life by methods similar to those the mountain climber uses to attain his goal.

First, there is the need of careful preparation: the journey will be long, perhaps, and no important thing should be forgotten. On the other hand, it is equally essential to carry no excess baggage. Between those making the journey there must be friendliness and understanding—a sense of teamwork and cooperation—for at times in mountain climbing all are roped together for mutual protection. And while keeping the high goal always in view, the traveler must yet be willing patiently to take each step as it comes. Also, he must not break ranks, or turn back, for this would confuse and discourage the others.

Spiritually interpreted, there are grand lessons in the foregoing for Christian Scientists, especially those who are just beginning to think about the forward journey which leads to a happy and worth-while human life. Before starting, we may well stop a moment to remember that our heavenly Father is with us all the way, and that His plan for His children includes all good and good alone. With this assurance, we are ready to enter confidently the path which leads to the heights of perfection.
