"If ye abide in me"

Jesus once said to his disciples, "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." A dictionary defines "abide" as "to remain stable or fixed in some state; continue." In the above message the Master was speaking of abiding in the Christ, or Truth, which he had been patiently and lovingly unfolding to his disciples. In his exemplification of the Christ, Jesus also taught his followers, by precept and example, that he was animated by godliness which came from the Father, and that the Word of God was the power by which he performed his many great and, to them, marvelous works.

Christian Science teaches that the healing works, which the Master said should follow them that believe on him, result from abiding in conscious unity with God. It also teaches that, through the realization of man's unity or oneness with the Father, we demonstrate the healing and regenerating power of the Logos or Word of God. Christian Science also shows how anyone abiding in the Christ, Truth, is capable of doing these healing works. Realizing that man is the child of God, that he is not a material, mortal being, but a spiritual idea reflecting God, having power over all material beliefs, one can in due course destroy in human thought whatever is unlike the divine image or likeness. This realization of the truth of spiritual man's being as God's image establishes the consciousness of spiritual perfection and brings to pass resultant healing or the manifestation of harmony.

In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 154) Mrs. Eddy writes, "Abide in His word, and it shall abide in you; and the healing Christ will again be made manifest in the flesh—understood and glorified." The many testimonies given in the Wednesday meetings, together with those recorded in the Christian Science periodicals, prove that Truth does heal all manner of disease when one turns to God for help, and seeks to abide in the pure atmosphere of divine Love.
