Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication
Hongkong and Canton, China.
It is cause for gratitude that although during the past year there have been many references to Christian Science in the Hongkong and Canton newspapers, very few of them have been of a nature to require correction. Excerpts from our Lesson-Sermons continue to be supplied to and published by the Hongkong and Canton newspapers. This work is felt to be of great importance, as these reports reach points far up-country. Some of these reports are accompanied by small advertisements of our Reading Room and authorized literature.
Only two letters of correction were required from this office, and these, I am glad to say, were promptly published by the editors. In one instance the bishop of Hongkong, after making a kindly reference to the Christian healing restored by Christian Science, unfortunately gave out several erroneous statements which called for correction. In the other instance, some statements at a theosophist meeting might have caused Christian Science practice to be wrongly associated with what is known as hypnotism, and a brief reply correcting this misstatement was made.
Through the kind courtesy of the Hongkong broadcasting station, a Christian Science lecture was broadcast for the first time in Hongkong. The results were most gratifying, as this lecture was widely heard by a very large unseen audience and at points far afield. In connection with the forthcoming lecture it may be noted that with the approval of the Manager of Committees on Publication, a short translation of this lecture will be made for publication in the vernacular press. This will probably mark the first translation of Christian Science literature into Chinese. The work was lovingly undertaken by a Chinese school-teacher, who is a sincere student and who has experienced healing through Christian Science. It is interesting to note here that Christian Science was recently presented to a prominent Chinese educationist, who eventually accepted a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. After reading the textbook, this Chinese gentleman is said to have remarked, China needs Christian Science.
Our international daily newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor, is exchanged with several Hongkong and Canton newspapers. During the period under review, numerous articles have been reprinted from the Monitor, usually with due credit. One editor recently remarked, "The Christian Science Monitor is a very fine newspaper and is appreciated by editors all over the world."
Nevada.
Editors of newspapers continue increasingly friendly toward our Cause. Eight editors subscribe to The Christian Science Monitor on our exchange-for-advertising plan, and two subscriptions to the Monitor have been given to editors of Reno newspapers by First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Reno. Thirteen editors continue to carry our Lesson-Sermon excerpts regularly. Reno newspapers continue to print a full report of all Christian Science lectures delivered in Reno, and partial reports of lectures have been printed in other Nevada newspapers. A Reno editor printed two lengthy editorials taken from the Monitor regarding the interest of one of our United States senators in the silver question. No articles misrepresenting our Cause appeared in the press during the year.
