Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 55): "In the words of St. John: 'He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.' This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science." Several years ago, when two of my loved ones passed on within four months, and to human sense there seemed nothing left but grief and loneliness, I learned that Christian Science is indeed the Comforter promised by the Master, and that, when faithfully applied, it never fails to comfort, sustain, and heal.

My first acquaintance with Christian Science came when I was a small child, through the healing of my grandmother, who was liberated after many years of suffering and semi-invalidism. Later a sister was healed of lung trouble; and many other beautiful healings were experienced in our large family. In fact, five generations have felt the healing touch of Truth.

Although I witnessed all these healings and always asked for treatment in Christian Science when needing physical relief, the desire for understanding came only after I was delivered from the very "valley of the shadow." Stricken suddenly with what seemed a severe case of typhoid fever, I became so ill that one night my sister found that I had to all appearances passed on. Instead of accepting the sense-testimony, she turned her thought to God, and worked for me in Christian Science. Upon returning to my bedside she found me sleeping peacefully and breathing more naturally than at any time during the illness. One week later I was back at my desk in the office where I was employed. I have often thought that the faith and courage of this dear sister must have been comparable to that of the Shunammite woman who could shut the door upon her son who had died and say, "It is well," as she went to ask help of Elisha, "the man of God."
