Real Recovery
Mankind evidently has an inherent sense that harmony, peace, happiness, and freedom are not only desirable but are indications of normality. Much of humanity's endeavor is directed to gaining or regaining these and like conditions, or to acquiring those things through which, it is believed, they may be realized. Individuals who lose their sense of health employ the best means of which they know to recover it. Those who suffer reverses in business are apt to put forth strenuous and hopeful efforts to recoup their losses. Of late, enough to fill many volumes has been written regarding the recovery of normal conditions in business, and much divergent and doubtful theorizing and experimenting has been indulged in, all with good intent.
Christian Science calls the world's attention to the fact that Christ Jesus was what might be called the premier recovery expert of all time. At the beginning of his public ministry he announced his mission and message when in the synagogue he read the prophet's words, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised;" and then the Master announced, "This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears." The Gospel record shows that he supported his words by tangible and convincing proofs wherein he demonstrated that the law of divine Mind is an ever operative and irresistible law of harmony, right activity, adjustment, and normality to all discordant, unjust, and evil conditions.
Through spiritual power alone Christ Jesus proved that humble and trusting obedience to God's law enables men to recover whatever of good they seem to have lost, or lost sight of. He healed all manner of disease, gave sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf; he supplied the physical needs of multitudes for food; he stilled the storm and restored to active usefulness some who had been dead. He set forth in his words the real recovery program for all men and all time, and by his deeds he verified his declarations. Furthermore, he gave definite instruction that his followers for all time should do the works he did, should carry on his program of real recovery.
