Peacemaking Warriors
An encouraging sign of the times is the increasingly widespread recognition of the fact that human warfare cannot end war any more than hate can mollify malice, than fear can antitode apprehension of evil, than shadows can dispel darkness. The only peacemaking warriors are they who recognize that their enemies are not other men but wrong thoughts, for, as Christ Jesus said, "a man's foes shall be they of his own household." In other words, wisdom leads us to perceive that men's foes are the disrupting and discordant beliefs which finds response in and operate within their own consciousness. A roll call with ourselves of our thought conditions may expose the presence of such disturbers of the peace as fear, ignorance of God, animality, selfishness, jealousy, and other war-provoking tendencies.
Christian Science presents the simple and scientific method of destroying evil and discord which was understood, taught, and practiced by Christ Jesus. He knew that God, good, is the Father of all that is real and true, and that God's creation or expression is necessarily good, harmonious, and perfect. This understanding of the truth enabled the Master to heal or displace error—sin, sickness, and death. He knew, and Christian Science teaches, that it is only by scientifically classifying evil as error and dealing with it as false that peace, health, and harmony can be established in human experience. Mrs. Eddy gives definite instruction regarding this in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." On page 29 we read: "Christians must take up arms against error at home and abroad. They must grapple with sin in themselves and in others, and continue this warfare until they have finished their course." Everyone must meet and master for himself whatever is unlike God, Truth and Love.
But what about those who seem bound by so-called family traits and inherited tendencies toward evil, those who from childhood perhaps have been regarded as having bad and disagreeable dispositions? To them, as to all mankind, Christian Science brings release and redemption in its clear explanation of God as the Father and Mother of all, and of man as the child of God, reflecting or imaging forth the qualities of divine Love, perfect Mind. Christian Science instructs men to be true to this spiritual premise in all their thinking, and to reject as illegal and illogical, as false and powerless, every suggestion that man's nature is akin to evil. Simply thinking and declaring these grand truths is not enough! We must love them and live them until they dominate and literally constitute our consciousness.
