My gratitude for the loving care of God, and for an...
My gratitude for the loving care of God, and for an understanding of God's power, gained from a study of Christian Science, cannot be too fully expressed. Because of my mother's teachings I have had faith in God, but I learned to know and understand Him through studying "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," reading the Christian Science publications, through church attendance, and the loving help of practitioners.
My faith in the healing power of Truth was given a severe test about the first of February, 1930. One afternoon while I was attending to simple household duties, a feeling of illness, from which I had suffered for an extended time, became extreme and I had to be carried to my bed. My husband and grown children became much alarmed, and as they are not in accord with the teaching of Christian Science, they insisted upon engaging the services of a locally prominent woman specialist. Her diagnosis was of such a serious nature that my family, now thoroughly alarmed, insisted on calling a doctor of first standing in his profession, for consultation. The result of the conference was a confirmation of the attending physician's judgment, and I was ordered at once to the hospital for observation and a possible operation. By this time fear had taken possession of me, and I asked that my son, who was in another city, be sent for at once. He left his work and traveled all night to get to my bedside. When I arrived at the hospital, the house physician examined me and concurred in the opinions of the two other physicians, and the hospital chart read "cancer." The doctors stated that because of my age and weakened condition, they feared the result of an operation. They expressed all the love and kindness within their knowledge, but not much hope of a cure.
My thoughts of fear were calmed and my faith in God restored when a member of my family asked me to have the help of a Christian Science practitioner. I readily agreed, and as my case seemed so hopeless, no objection was advanced by other members of my family. The second day after the practitioner had begun to declare the all-power of God, the house physician examined me and found my condition to be normal. The hurried visit of the attending and consultant physicians confirmed the healing, and they were all as joyful as they were puzzled. In a short time I left the hospital, and there has been no return of the discordant condition.
