From the following it will be evident how much gratitude I owe to Mrs. Eddy for the many healings which Christian Science has brought to my family and me.

After two periods of about seven years' service in the Netherlands India as a military pharmacist, I traveled back to Holland in the year 1914. Through my daily contact with doctors I was thoroughly acquainted with and under the influence of the opinions of medical men and was myself very often under medical treatment for chronic appendicitis, malaria, nervous weakness, typhus, and stomach and intestinal disturbances. With great anticipation I returned to Holland to spend one year's furlough. The world war broke out and all those on furlough from the Netherlands India were mobilized. Very soon there appeared such a serious manifestation of the stomach and intestinal troubles that when the time came for the medical committee to examine me their verdict was, "Unfit for all further military services in the tropics, as well as in the home country."

In the meanwhile I put myself under treatment with a well-known Amsterdam specialist, who put me on a strict diet, with the intention of curing a state of chronic constipation and its miserable consequences. My nerves through all these troubles were in such a terrible state that, without my knowledge, plans were under consideration to place me in a sanitarium. The change which brought harmony to replace discord came in May, 1918, when I was sent to America on business.
