I am intensely grateful for the teachings of Christian Science,...
I am intensely grateful for the teachings of Christian Science, which have indeed fulfilled in my experience the promise of our Master, Christ Jesus, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." I did not approach Christian Science for physical healing, but when it was presented to me by a business friend I was interested immediately, and on reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I was convinced by the logic of its teachings that it was the truth about God and man for which I had been searching.
During this period of study I was healed of an internal disorder for which I had been compelled to take medicine daily for many years. Subsequently many other discordant conditions were gratefully overcome.
One in particular stands out in my thought. I had for many years suffered intermittently from a very painful nasal difficulty for which I had consulted many physicians, but I had obtained only temporary relief. On some occasions so intense was the pain that only the administration of morphia enabled me to obtain some cessation of suffering. Soon after I commenced the study of Christian Science an attack of this kind started to develop, and although I tried to see the truth about it the trouble seemed to follow its usual course and gradually increased in intensity. So bad did it become that, in the hope of easing the pain and thus being able to continue to work against the error, I finally had recourse to the old material remedies; but on this occasion, instead of alleviating the difficulty, the pain became even worse. At last, realizing that as materia medica could help me no more, I had only Christian Science to rely on, I turned again to the textbook and was led to open it at the wonderful definition of "angels" (p. 581), beginning, "God's thoughts passing to man." I cannot describe the feeling of peace and joy which gradually took possession of my consciousness. The result was that as I studied this passage and gained a clearer perception of its spiritual meaning I was instantaneously and permanently healed of that difficulty which had been a haunting fear for fifteen years. It was in this way that I began to apprehend in some measure our Leader's loving warning (Science and Health, p. 22), "Go not back to error, nor become a sluggard in the race."
