Die Auslese
In an article on Christian Science in Die Auslese, there are statements which need correction.
For example we find the assertion that "Mrs. Eddy was hostile to medical science." This statement does not give the true position, although it is a fact that the Christian Science method of treating disease is quite different from that of materia medica, for its healing is accomplished by establishing in human consciousness the truth of man's connection with the divinely creative power, God. In Christian Science reality is recognized as spiritual.
It is evident that modern thinkers on various lines are beginning to realize that the material universe and its phenomena cannot be satisfactorily explained purely in terms of matter. Professor D. Carl Friess, when lecturing a short time ago in the College for Biosophy, said in substance: "The science of today is built upon a material-mechanical foundation which in the last ten years has begun to crumble. Excellent thinkers such as Hans Driesch and others have proved that the mechanical development theory is unsound." Even such a well-known doctor as Professor Schleich comes to the same conclusion. In "Besonnte Vergangenheiten" (p. 206) he writes: "Not even in modern physics does such a thing as matter substance exist. All is movement, idea, flux. The world has become wholly mental. Materialism and mechanism are dead. Life is a manifestation of the soul of the universe. Even form itself is the mental product of these metaphysical 'undivided organisms,' and this mental product one must call 'the God' (neuter)."
