Your issue of November 24 contains a letter on the subject of Christian Science which needs correction.
Our critic is evidently unaware that all discord has its origin in the beliefs of the mortal or carnal mind. That their only remedy comes from the spiritual understanding of God, divine Mind, operating through spiritual law, is proved by the healings recorded throughout the Bible. When Elijah multiplied oil and meal for the woman of Zarephath, and Elisha multiplied oil for the widow, they were utilizing the same spiritual law which Christ Jesus clearly understood and demonstrated when he multiplied the loaves and fishes over eight hundred years later. The Old and the New Testament also contain accounts of the healing of all manner of illness, from the leprosy of Miriam by Moses to the raising of the dead by Peter and by Paul. Christian Science is the rediscovery of the divine Principle and rules which lay at the back of these healings.
Our critic, referring to the teaching of Christian Science, says, "The most absurd point of all was the denial of the reality of matter." In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 335), we read, "Reality is spiritual, harmonious, immutable, immortal, divine, eternal." It is evident that matter cannot be so described. Natural science has reduced matter to electrical energy or force, which is a concept of the carnal or human mind, and therefore the antipode of Spirit.
