I have had many ups and downs during my travel Spiritward...
I have had many ups and downs during my travel Spiritward, which began about nine years ago; but there has been ever a glorious uplifting, with many blessings in disguise.
I was not attracted to Christian Science for physical healing, but I was quickly healed of the need of glasses, which I had worn for many years; also of drinking, gambling, and many other immoral traits; and of colds, cuts, and various other ills that formerly kept me in bondage. At the time of my turning to Christian Science I was in a far north country, in hiding because of a false accusation, an alleged misdemeanor that came about through association with bad company. I was discouraged and longed for a sense of freedom and reformation, and I prayed in the only way I knew. I did not understand God then, but I knew that there was a God somewhere. Now I thank God continually, for He heard my prayer, simple as it was.
Since that time I have learned that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." Right where I was I found one of my first blessings in disguise, for the place where I was in hiding proved to be the home of a Christian Scientist, who readily and lovingly perceived my need, and mentioned to me the subject of Christian Science. But I was very hostile, professing at that time to be a practical psychologist. Later she introduced me to a young man who was also a Christian Scientist. I had a talk with him, and finally indicated my intention of studying this Science. I was lovingly supplied with that wonderful book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and some of our Leader's other writings, and immediately and joyously retired to my quarters. Being in hiding, I had nothing else to do but study; and I spent many hours night and day looking deeply into this subject, as I was hungry to learn more about this new-found Comforter.
