Toward the end of the year 1930 I had what was diagnosed...
Toward the end of the year 1930 I had what was diagnosed as a stroke of paralysis. That morning I had gone into the sitting room in order to dress there, because that room was better heated than the others; and while I was attending to the stove, I suddenly fell and was not able to rise. There was nobody to help me because I lived alone in my apartment, and I did not have enough strength to call for help by knocking on the floor. Helpless and not yet fully dressed I lay on the floor of that room, which gradually grew colder and colder after the fire had burned out. The neighbors, who had been wondering why they did not hear anything from me, were called on the third morning by the cleaning woman, who came that day and was surprised to find the door was not opened to her. Then the apartment door was opened—in the presence of a police officer—and I was found lying unconscious on the floor, and around me were several chairs which I must have overturned in my effort to rise. A physician, who was called at once, diagnosed the trouble as a stroke of paralysis and feared that pneumonia would be added to it.
Upon the request of my son, who lives in Berlin and who had been notified at once by telephone of the occurrence, a Christian Science practitioner was called in and took up the work immediately. When my son arrived the next morning he dismissed the doctor, explaining to him that God was our only physician, because we were Christian Scientists. Through the consecrated work of the practitioner I was protected from pneumonia; also wounds on my back which caused me much pain and suffering, were healed. For several months my daughter, who had made great sacrifices to come over from America to see me, took care of me and supported me with explanations and references to passages from the writings of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
Although the healing of paralysis was not a quick one, the ever-presence of divine Truth and Love, and the healing power of the Christ were apparent. While at first I was paralyzed on one side and deprived of my speech, I was able to converse with my family and friends after a few weeks; and after four months I was able to go up and down two flights of stairs and take short walks in the country.
