"Receptive hearts"
Many today are desirous of knowing the truth, longing to learn of the nature of God and His creation. A great host of men and women are eagerly waiting for the divine revelation. The material sense of things has brought to them only the fleeting pleasures of physicality, with its numerous troubles—sickness and sorrow, lack and loneliness. It has also brought to them restlessness, not peace; discord, not harmony. How often have they cried from the depths of despair, When will the way be made plain out of this material darkness?
Yes; the desire for spiritual enlightenment is strong in the hearts of earth's millions. Every approach to good on their part testifies to it. Every effort after a purer life points to it. Every attempt to-be more kind, more just, more merciful, proves it. It is the duty, then, of those who themselves are spiritually enlightened, who possess an understanding of God and His universe, to bring the truth to their fellow men. Christian Scientists recognize this; and the Christian Science movement is doing a great work today in making known that which alone can heal mankind of its material woes. In a paragraph which has for its marginal heading the words "Receptive hearts," Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 570): "Millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ's name, and never fear the consequences."
The great necessity is that there should be receptivity on the part of those to whom the truth is presented. Let them be open-minded, free from bias, sincerely desirous of good, and expectant of good, and they will not fail to perceive the truth, understand it, and so be able to demonstrate it. Men must become as little children to be truly receptive. For the childlike thought loves good, loves love, loves purity, and has wonderful trustfulness, wonderful faith. "Willingness to become as a little child and to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea," wrote our Leader on pages 323 and 324 of Science and Health. "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God," said Christ Jesus.
