Concerning Overcoming
[Original article in German]
The desire of every thinking person is to live a healthy, happy, and successful life. Yet how many who, according to material sense, are at present sick, sinning, sad, discouraged, and despairing, believe that such a life—if possible at all—cannot be reached until after the experience called death! This is a grave mistake. In Revelation we read the inspiring words, "He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son." Overcoming! Here we have the watchword which, when obeyed, leads out of this "vale of tears," through spiritual understanding, to the free, joyous heights of life eternal.
One of the first requirements is that we admit the possibility of overcoming. How can anyone doubt this when mindful of the glorious promise of the Bible, "It is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure"? In confidence in God, good, whom we know to be omnipotent, lies our assurance of overcoming. As we take our stand on the side of God, the supremacy of good insures our success. Allied with the Most High we can prove ourselves equal to the tasks which confront us.
Contemplating the life of Martin Luther, we note that he was imbued with a strong, firm faith that God was with him that God supported him in every vicissitude, and that the right for which he fought would win. How could he have overcome the bitter opposition of worldly power, hatred, and persecution, had he not been conscious of divine power and protection? It is inspiring to contemplate the victorious overcoming of Moses, Christ Jesus, Paul, and Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. History is rich in examples of heroism, and we note that the spirit of overcoming is the animating power in every victory. What is this spirit? How is it acquired, and how practiced?
