I took up the study of Christian Science in 1916, not for physical healing, although I had been a semi-invalid for many years, but with the hope that it might prove to be a practical religion, of which I was in great need at that time. That it is practical has been proved through the gradual correcting of faults of character, making me more honest with myself, less egotistical, and less critical of others. It has also brought me better health than had ever seemed possible.

An internal displacement, which at times caused great pain and made it impossible for me to stand erect, disappeared without specific work being done, during the first year of my study of Science and Health. Severe toothache from abscessed roots, bronchitis, blood poisoning from the sting of an insect, headaches, and a tendency to colds, besides many other ailments, have been overcome, some through my own work and others through the help of friends or a practitioner.

One night I awoke with a severe attack of pleurisy, and the pain increased so rapidly that soon I could breathe only with short gasps. As no one in the house at that time but myself was interested in Christian Science, and as my husband was ill, I was unwilling to call anyone, so worked for myself as best I could. On page 391 of Science and Health, under the marginal heading "Righteous rebellion," our Leader has written: "Banish the belief that you can possibly entertain a single intruding pain which cannot be ruled out by the might of Mind, and in this way you can prevent the development of pain in the body. No law of God hinders this result." Holding fast to this truth, I was able to lie down; and on awaking in the morning I was completely free.
