During my fourteen years' study of Christian Science my mental state has completely changed; and the idea I had formed of life has been radically reversed in proportion as I have grasped and assimilated the truths contained in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

During the war-time mobilization to which Switzerland had to resort I contracted tuberculosis of the lungs. After various steps were taken, I was sent to a military sanatorium. There one of my fellow sufferers lent me a copy of Le Héraut de la Science Chrétienne. I was immediately attracted by the logic of its articles. I had always studied my Bible without understanding it very well, and like many people I would ask myself, How can the commandment, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself," be made practical now, in a world apparently convulsed by evil?

When I went to a Christian Science practitioner to lay my case, including my mental distress, before her, treatment was immediately and lovingly given me. In 1918 I bought the textbook, the French translation of which had just appeared. Day and night I stuck to my studying, and read with tears the chapter entitled "Atonement and Eucharist." I was overwhelmed with the weight of sins to which I had been addicted; but three weeks later I was healed. The doctors took X-rays which showed that my physical condition was healthy and normal again.
