Organized Effort
[An Address delivered by Clifford P. Smith, Editor of the Bureau of History and Statistics of The Mother Church, at the General Activities Meeting held in The Mother Church on June 6, 1933]
As Christian Scientists, we have more need than most people to clearly comprehend the nature and usefulness of organization. Now and then, we come in contact with believers in Christian Science who do not join our movement because they do not believe in organization. Sometimes, also, we come in contact with members of The Mother Church or of its branches who are tempted to withdraw for the alleged reason that organization is material or not spiritual. Furthermore, any Christian Scientist is hindered in his life and work whose thinking on this subject is obscure or vague. Therefore, every Christian Scientist ought to be quite clear in his thought as to the nature and usefulness of organization.
As defined in dictionaries, a movement is "an agitation or joint effort to bring about some result." The word "organize" means "to give an organic structure to; to cause to unite and work together in orderly fashion." The word "organization" means "systematic arrangement for a definite purpose; a number of individuals systematically united for some end or work."
