Conquering Sin

THE healing and regenerating power of Christian Science has been experienced by thousands the world over, and for its definite physical cures its students are indeed grateful. But there is a larger gratitude which wells up in their hearts and which comes from learning that sin and error, including hate, anger, selfishness, revenge, and jealousy, are not real and that belief in them can be destroyed.

This valuable information is revealed to the world today in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, wherein is found the method of handling and destroying sin and error. This method has been proved to be the same that Christ Jesus used, its basic teaching being that God, good, is real, is All, and therefore that the seeming opposite of good is unreal. On page 461 of the textbook our Leader says, "The truth regarding error is, that error is not true, hence it is unreal," and all who are accepting and demonstrating this fundamental statement quite naturally are realizing more harmony in their human affairs.

When one seems to be involved in unpleasant relationships wherein evil appears to be reigning, how is he to see the discordant condition as unreal? Christian Science shows him how this is done and leads to the accomplishment of desirable results. Since "the human footsteps leading to perfection are indispensable" (Science and Health, p. 254), it is often found that one of the first helpful footsteps in overcoming error is to refrain from voicing error. To this end the admonition given us by Peter is a safe guide: "He that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: let him eschew evil, and do good." Although at times this instruction may seem difficult to carry out, obedience to it is sure to bring about much good.
