Christian Science was first brought to my notice in 1925,...

Christian Science was first brought to my notice in 1925, when I procured the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I read it, at the same time having absent treatment for a weak stomach, the aftermath of a severe case of dysentery which had afflicted me some months before. The treatment resulted in considerable relief, but I did not feel that I was completely healed. About that time I also had help in Science in connection with a final university examination for which I was sitting. This was satisfactorily accomplished and during the week it lasted I was able to enjoy sound sleep without the aid of a sleeping draft, a thing I had not been able to do during four previous examinations which I had taken.

After graduating I went away for a holiday and notwithstanding the definite benefit I had through the ministrations of Christian Science I did not express gratitude, and gradually drifted away from it. Unconsciously the thought had been entertained that medical aid could benefit me, and when later the stomach trouble reappeared I consulted a doctor, who very kindly examined me and prescribed treatment. At that time I informed a Christian Science friend with whom I had been attending the church services that while Christian Science appeared to me to be the truth and a very beautiful religion, I felt that it did not work in my case. The medical treatment did not, however, benefit me in any way, and after adhering to it for about a week I suffered more from the stomach condition than I had ever done before. This sharp suffering caused a mental awakening and brought the realization that materia medica was of no use to me.

Suffering not only with the stomach trouble, but also with a severe attack of influenza and swollen gums, I went to consult a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly undertook to work for me. This was on a Saturday, and on the following Monday I was engaged to appear as counsel for the Crown in several important cases to be tried in a near-by town. I was then at the very threshold of my profession and there was coupled with the illness a depressing sense of fear that, owing to lack of experience, I should not be equal to the task. This was mentioned to the practitioner, who greatly calmed my thought with her clear explanations of the truth.
