Paul wrote, "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." This transformation has indeed been taking place in my consciousness since I began the study of Christian Science. The "former things" are gradually passing away, and material thinking is being replaced by more spiritual desires, purer thoughts, and higher ideals.
The physical healings in our family have been many. Measles, pneumonia, boils, bones, colds, heart trouble, and various illnesses which were not diagnosed or named, are among the ailments we have been able to overcome through the realization that God's laws of health and harmony are supreme, and that so-called laws of matter or mortal mind have, in reality, no power to hold men in bondage to sickness. About three years ago I sustained what proved to be a very severe injury to a kidney. The pain became more and more intense, and to material sense it seemed that poison was spreading through my body. The condition grew worse until it seemed to me, and to those with me, that I was surely passing on. A Christian Science practitioner was called, and after she had sat by my bed for a few moments calmly declaring the truth as we are taught in Christian Science, the pain eased and I was able to speak. A short time later I ate breakfast, and in a few days was perfectly healed. This condition has never again evidenced itself.
Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 410), "The more difficult seems the material condition to be overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our faith and the purer our love." I am very grateful for the hope and comfort this statement and many other passages from Science and Health brought to me in times of great stress. When it seemed that my home would be broken up and destroyed by "the god of this world," I was able to replace this distressing condition with harmony and to realize that "in him [God] we live, and move, and have our being." By clinging "steadfastly to God and His idea" (ibid., p. 495) and knowing that evil, by whatever name or in whatever guise, has not the power to destroy God's work, which certainly includes a harmonious home for His children, I have been able to express more love and to see more love expressed in our home than ever before. I am deeply grateful to the practitioner, whose help meant so much to me at that time.
