In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 1), Mrs. Eddy writes, "Desire is prayer." For some time before hearing of Christian Science I had desired to know something of God, a God who I felt was at hand, but whom I did not know how to find.
One day, while I was shopping, the lady attending me remarked that she had a book she was sure I should find helpful. I accepted the loan, and upon reaching home found that the book was Science and Health. I immediately began to read, for I was in search of health, having suffered from a nervous breakdown for four years, being unable to regain my strength and constantly under the care of doctors. They told me that I should not work, except to do necessary duties, and should rest whenever possible to reserve strength for those duties. First the difficulty of noises in the head was destroyed, though it was some time before I realized that I had experienced a healing in Christian Science.
I continued reading the textbook, and when I came to the words (p. 410), "Christian scientific practice begins with Christ's keynote of harmony, 'Be not afraid!'" I knew that I must learn more of that perfect Love which casts out fear, for I had been afraid so long that I wanted to be free. In the years that have followed, as I have faithfully sought to prove this statement, it has never failed, and I am grateful to know that I am daily learning more and more that God is Love.
